Bohinj lies in the heart of the Julian Alps, the largest and loftiest mountain group in Slovenia and the furthest south-eastern section of the Alps. In the south it is bounded by the Lower Bohinj Mountains, which continue in an arc into the Triglav chain, dominated by Mount Triglav, from which the Triglav National Park takes its name. The most famous attraction is Lake Bohinj, the largest permanent freshwater lake in Slovenia. It is not the only lake in Bohinj. The mountains around Triglav hide a further seven magical little lakes.
